There are many methods of air compression, divided into positive displacement type or rotary power type.

Positive displacement compressor
It works by forcing air into a reduced volume chamber for compression. When the maximum pressure is reached, the port or valve opens and air is discharged from the compression chamber into the outlet system. Common types of positive displacement compressors are

2. Piston type air compressor: The air compressor uses this principle to pump air into the air chamber by using the constant movement of the piston. They use a check valve to direct air into and out of the chamber, and the bottom of the chamber consists of a moving piston. When the piston is on a downward stroke, it draws air into the chamber. During its up stroke, air is forced out and into the tank during opening. Reciprocating compressors are generally divided into two basic categories, single-stage and two-stage. Single-stage compressors are typically in the 5 horsepower range. Two-stage compressors usually fall. Entering the 5 to 30 horsepower range, two-stage compressors provide higher efficiency than single-stage compressors. As a result, these compressors are the most common unit in the small business community. Single- and two-stage compressor capacities are typically available in horsepower (HP), standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) *, and pounds per square inch (PSI). To a lesser degree, some compressors are rated cubic feet per minute (ACFM). Others are rated in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Using a CFM to rate a compressor is incorrect because the flow it represents is independent of the pressure reference. That is, 20 CFM at 60 PSI.

3. Rotary screw compressor: It uses positive displacement compression by matching two screw screws. When rotating, the screw guides air into a chamber, and the volume of the chamber decreases as the screw rotates.

4. Vane compressor: Slotted rotors with different vane positions are used to introduce air into the chamber and compress the volume. This type of compressor delivers a fixed amount of air at high pressure.

5.Dynamic displacement
Dynamic displacement air compressors include centrifugal compressors and axial compressors. In these types, the rotating component transfers its kinetic energy to the air and eventually converts it into pressure energy. These use centrifugal forces generated by rotating impellers to accelerate and then decelerate the captured air, thereby pressurizing it.
